Where is Sera Lake and How to Get There?

Sera Lake is an important natural beauty located in Trabzon and Akçaabat. It is situated within the boundaries of Yıldızlı neighborhood, 12 km from Trabzon and 8 km from Akçaabat. It has a length of 1200 m, an average width of 150 m, and a maximum depth of 20 m. Sera Lake was formed as a result of a landslide in 1950, which blocked the front of the Sera Stream.

In 2010, it was declared a Nature Park, and public park arrangements were made around it, offering walking trails, picnic areas, and daily resting facilities for local and foreign visitors. Sera Lake is considered the starting point of the Eastern Black Sea tour among the places to visit in Trabzon.

Location, History, and Formation of Sera Lake

Sera Lake is a landslide dam lake located within the borders of the Akçaabat district of Trabzon. The lake was formed in the Derecik Valley, between the municipalities of Yıldızlı and Derecik. It takes its name from the old name of Yıldızlı, which is Sera.

The lake was formed on Tuesday, February 21, 1950, when large rocks that broke off from the slopes of the Derecik Valley blocked the valley floor due to heavy rainfall. Some of these rocks were so large that even today, areas where landslides occur can be understood. These collapses led to the formation of deep cliffs in the valley, and on the day of the collapses, a small local earthquake occurred.

The mass that broke off from the mountain is 30 m wide, 650 m long, 130 m high, and has dimensions of 15 million m³. The lake took its full form in 18 days, and the local people witnessed the formation of a lake firsthand.

Sera Lake Tourism and Hotels

This natural formation, which occurred after the flood, is now admired by local and foreign tourists alike. Restaurants, children’s entertainment parks, and tea enjoyment in samovars are offered at the facilities located on the lakeside. Additionally, you can engage in activities such as lake biking when weather conditions are favorable, further enhancing your experience.

After Uzungöl and the Sumela Monastery, Sera Lake, being the closest to the city center, has been designated as a Nature Park by the decision of the Council of Ministers.

The fact that the lake is 5 minutes away from the city center and 10 minutes away from the new stadium of Trabzonspor, the Şenol Güneş Sports Complex, and being the closest tourism center to the airport has further increased the attractiveness of the lake day by day.
